Prinze was born in Los Angeles, California. He is the only child of actor-comedian Freddie Prinze and real estate agent Katherine (Kathy) Elaine Barber (née Cochran). On January 29, 1977, Prinze\'s father died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, less than a year after Prinze was born. Prinze grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was raised Roman Catholic, embraces his Hispanic ancestry (his paternal grandmother was Puerto Rican), and speaks Spanish as part of his heritage.
