CARRIE FISHER IS DEAD.

I hated reading that headline. I'm sure everyone did. She was our Princess.

As a human, we obviously feel sadness with loss.
As fans, feel the loss and sadness, whilst selfishly thinking of a still unfinished role.
As collectors and sellers, at the end of the day, we unfortunately have to deal with dollar signs.

So, how soon is too soon? To buy, to sell...to even pose this question?

I remember going online the day that she had passed away and saw the prices skyrocket! I at the time, didn't own a Carrie Fisher signed piece. I was on the hunt. I believe at the time right after her death, she was around $300-$400 on an 8x10. Now we have seen that price come down a bit. Depending on the item of course.

I waited.

I'm glad I waited.

Tons of Fishers are popping up for sale, and at very reasonable prices. Seeing bookplates go from $100-$150, 8x10 sometimes around the $150-$300 mark, depending on the image.

Is it that "knee jerk" reaction to death that drives the price we are willing to pay? Or rather the actual value?

In her life Carrie probably signed hundreds of thousands of items. Her autograph does go up in value of course, now that she has passed, but what is the line on price gouging? Should we buy and sell a celebrity on the actual day of their death? It's kind of morbid to discuss, but as a collector and now as a seller, I can see both sides.

Would I make more money selling on the day she died?
Of course I would have. As many did.

Does that make the sellers terrible people, or rather, good business men and women?
I think the latter.

However.

That being said, in my opinion, maybe give it a week, in good taste?
I feel as a seller, you are still going to make money on your investment no matter the time it takes to sell. Day of, week of, or years later.

Would you garner more profit off of selling in the first day? Yes.

Does it make you a bad person if you decide to sell on that day?
OF COURSE NOT.

Is it in poor taste?
Maybe a little.

So how long do you think is the appropriate amount of time to sell?

How long is too long to wait as a collector?

Comment your thoughts below!
May the force be with us all.

I've been collecting autographs personally, since 1997. I was infatuated with Star Wars, and still am. My very first autograph was from Jeremy Bulloch, and I was hooked. 21 years later, I now operate OCS: Orlando Celebrity Signings, a company dedicated to providing authentic autographs, by way of private signings.
